Resveratrol

Resveratrol

Over the last few months resveratrol has come into the spotlight after the segment on red wine was aired on 60 Minutes. Resveratrol is actually part of a plants defensive mechanism. It’s a toxin plants have to ward off attack by certain bacteria and fungi. Research is showing in humans it supports cardiovasular health and normal cell health. It may work as a anti inflamatory, anticancer, help to lower blood sugar and help to maintain normal cell activity.

Studies of numerous species have shown that a reduction in calories has been linked to a longer lifespan. The SIRT-1 gene activates a critical component of calorie restriction in mammals and promotes fat metabolization. There is evidence that resveratrol may be a calorie restriction mimetic, a compound that mimics the effects of calorie restriction by targeting metabolic and stress response pathways affected by calorie restriction, but without restricting caloric intake, which may be helpful in promoting a longer lifespan. By promoting healthy SIRT-1 activity, resveratrol promotes healthy mitochondrial function and supports energy expenditure, thereby promoting a healthy weight. Researchers at Cornell University in Nov. 2008 reported that dietary supplementation with resveratrol significantly reduced plaque formation in animal brains, a component of Alzheimer’s  and other Neurodegenerative diseases.  It’s also been found that only 70% of resveratrol is absorbed when taken as a pill orally vs the liquid form holding it in your mouth for 1 minute before swallowing allowing for absorption though the buccal mucossa. By far the highest concenrtations of resveratrol is found in red grapes. Certain specices of red grapes have higher concentrations than others muscadine grapes having the higest concentration. Resveratrol can also be found in blueberries bilberries and peanuts just remember when you cook you you can degrade up to 50% of the available resveratrol. I’ve always stated the benifits of liquid supplements over pill form for better absorption. If your going to take supplements why take a form that is not totally absorbed in the end the cost will be higher. Is resveratrol the key to living healthier? There are many factors to consider. Stress, diet, exercise the absense of subluxations just to name a few. If you practice a healthy lifestyle you will live a healthier life and perhaps a longer life. I’ve included a link to the 60 Minutes segment on resveratrol here.
